Student Member Policies and Guidelines
Vivace Youth Orchestra
A youth program of the Georgetown Symphony Society
The Vivace Youth Orchestra is open to student members of all ages not yet graduated from high school. All students must be members in good standing of their school’s orchestra or band program if such a program exists on the campus. Orchestra or Band Directors are expected to verify student enrollment prior to a student audition for membership. Any student who drops out or is removed from the school’s orchestra or band program will immediately forfeit membership in VYO. Membership in the Vivace Youth Orchestra is for one full season. The season runs concurrently with the academic school year. Students are expected to participate for the entire season. Partial season or “semester” memberships are not available.
Auditions will be held during the course of the first concert cycle and adjusted periodically throughout the season. Student experience and maturity on their instrument will be a primary factor with concern for a balanced instrumentation the biggest goal. Audition materials can include – Prepared music of student choice that exhibits the student performing at the highest levels in both technical and lyrical playing. This could be a technical/lyrical etude, solo or orchestral excerpt(s). VYO does not assign a specific tryout piece for any instrument auditions.
Acceptance into the Orchestra
During the 2017-18 season we will be encouraging membership into the VYO through participation in our “open” rehearsals. Students and Families who wish to participate in the full season will be notified via email about completing the application process. The directors of the VYO reserve the right to deny participation for any student they deem not ready for the challenges of a part-time orchestra with the hope that they will apply again when the opportunity arises.
Section, Part and Seating Assignment
Section, part and seating assignments will be made and adjusted during the first five weeks of rehearsals for the first concert. Chair placements and solo/part assignments will be made by the VYO teaching staff based upon audition, chair-tests, rotation or other method selected by the VYO staff. These assignments are subject to change throughout the season.
Rehearsal /Concert Dates and Times
The calendar of concerts and rehearsals is contained within this handbook. All rehearsals are on Sunday afternoons from 2:00 to 4:30 PM. All concerts are on Sunday afternoons. Students who would need to consistently arrive late or leave early should not consider membership in VYO.
Students are required to attend all rehearsals and performances. In the event of illness or family emergency, students must notify the VYO Director in advance. Any student with repeating attendance problems may be removed from the group.
Tuition for the 2017-18 Season is $240. Additional family members are $210 each. Students and parents are expected to stay current with tuition payments on the following schedule: A $20 fee to participate in the open rehearsals must be paid on August 27. This fee will be rolled into your full year tuition. Upon acceptance of student membership, a minimum $100 non refundable tuition deposit must be made by September 17, 2017. The remaining balance of $140 must be paid in full before the second concert on November 26, 2017. Students that leave membership in VYO for any reason will not be eligible for a refund of any portion of the tuition or fees.
It is the philosophy of the Vivace Youth Orchestra that no talented, dedicated student should be denied membership based on an inability to pay tuition. Full and partial scholarships are available. Parents will be asked to provide information concerning the hardship and student’s school director will be expected to provide a letter of recommendation in order for the student to be considered. Ask the VYO Director for more information.
Student members of Vivace Youth Orchestra are expected to display outstanding, exemplary behavior at all VYO rehearsals and at all times while representing the orchestra. Students will show respect for themselves, fellow student members, rehearsal instructors and conductors at all times. Failure to meet this expectation may result in removal from the group with no refund of tuition or fees.
